House painting can be a very tough and difficult task. Because of this, it is very important to have a checklist of what you’re going to need so you can take care of potential problems before they become real problems. A checklist will allow you to keep track of where things are going. You’ll also know if the painting project is taking a wrong turn so you can keep it back on the straight and narrow path to an effective and quick completion.

CHOOSING SHEEN
The different thing that you need to do is to choose the fitting sheen. After choosing the colors, what you need to do is to choose the right sheen. Few of the sheens that you can choose from include flat paint, satin finish, semi-gloss, and gloss. Flat paint will absorb light and can hide imperfections on the surface while satin finishes can be easily washed which makes it perfect for rooms where kids gather and play. Semi-gloss is a paint sheen that can also be washed, just like a satin finish. However, it provides a shiny aspect that can be too overpowering for a room. You can use semi-gloss for the kitchen or the bathroom. Lastly, gloss is a sheen that should be reserved for rooms that receive the most abuse, especially playrooms.
CHOOSING COLORS
What you need to do first in the home painting project is to choose the colors. You need to decide on the colors that you want by taking advantage of a color wheel that will guide you in the principles of selecting a scheme. Do you want to go the monochromatic route by simply choosing only one color and applying degrees of shade and hue? Or do you want to use analogous color schemes that use colors that are similar to each other? Or do you want to use complementary schemes in which opposing colors are used to create balance? These are just a few of the questions that you’ll have to ask yourself when you’re deciding on the colors for your house.
PREPARATION INSPECTION
Check the area that you want to paint so you can determine how much prep will be needed. Check which lighting fixtures need to be removed, outlet plates that need to be unscrewed, and items that need to be removed from the walls during the painting project. Also, make sure that you have all the tools that are needed to complete this task and also make sure that you have enough tape to cover trim as you paint the windows and doors. If you’re planning to paint more than one room, purchase reusable drop cloths that you can wash and can be taken from room to room.
HOW MUCH PAINT?
After choosing the sheen, determining how much paint to be used should be next in the checklist. You need to measure the surface area so that you will know how much paint you’re going to buy. A simple formula works for this part. You just have to multiply the length of the wall by its height so you can find the total area. Then add all the areas of the walls together. Multiply the door or window width by its height so you can find the area and then subtract all of these from the total wall area. You can arrive then at an accurate estimate of how much surface will be covered.
PREP TOOLS
See to it that you have all the needed equipment for room preparation before you begin the painting. Equipment will include wallpaper removal tools such as sponges, spray bottles, and scrapers. You will also need equipment that can remove sand surfaces, dust, smooth surfaces, and that can repair holes in the wall and treat mildew strains.
PAINTING TOOLS
Finally, you need to check if you have the necessary painting tools. You should collect all the right equipment and tools that will be necessary for completing the task. Do you want to use brushes and rollers or do you want to rent a spray, too? Sprays can be very helpful especially for large surfaces. And if you have a high ceiling, you should look for extenders and a stepladder.
Aside from these, you shouldn’t forget to purchase protective items like masks, safety goggles, and gloves. These are all the things that you should do first before you begin the home painting project. You need to remember all these so that you can be sure that the painting project will be a raging success.
You need to have a checklist even if you’re just going to hire a painting contractor. You may not be doing the task yourself but you still need to decide on the paint colors, choose the appropriate sheen, estimate how much paint to use, and do the preparation.
